For each
scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each
option may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. A 29 year old lady presented with painful ulceration of
the vulval skin. Histologically, there were intraepithelial blisters,
intranuclear viral inclusions and eosinophilic cytoplasmic swelling.
2. A 42 year old lady presented to a clinic for a smear test
but explained that due to living abroad she had not had one for 8 years. The
smear showed severe dyskaryosis and she was referred for colposcopic
examination, which revealed dysplastic changes in the full thickness of the
cervical epithelium.
3. A young lady is found to have chronic irritation and
inflammation of the vulva. A pap smear and use of a silver stain reveals fungi
within the keratin layer and superficial epithelium.
4. A 22 year old lady presented with a vaginal
discharge. Gram staining revealed “Clue
cells” surrounded by rods, that were “Gram variable”.
5. A pap smear taken from a chronic granulomatous ulcer
shows a necrotic centre, periarteritis and endarteritis obliterans and an
intense peripheral cellular infiltrate consisting mainly of mononuclear cells
and giant cells.
